SPA 101: ELEMENTARY SPANISH I

This is the first half of a foundation to the Spanish language vocabulary and structure. It is for students with little or no previous knowledge of the language. Included are the fundamentals of speaking, listening, reading and writing, as well as culture relating to the Spanish-speaking world. Grammatical concepts will include the present-tense verbs and basic sentence syntax.

SPA 102: ELEMENTARY SPANISH II

This is the second half of a foundation course to the Spanish language vocabulary and structure. It is a continuation of Elementary Spanish I. Included are additional fundamentals of speaking, listening, reading and writing as well as culture relating to the Spanish-speaking world. Grammatical concepts will include both preterit and imperfect past-tense verb forms. Spanish 102 would be appropriate for someone who has successfully completed SPA 101, or a student with two years of high school Spanish.

SPA 201: INTERMEDIATE SPANISH I

his is the first intermediate-level Spanish course. It will expand on improving the listening, reading, writing and speaking skills, as well as culture in the Spanish-speaking world. It provides an overall grammar review with the introduction of more advanced structures which will include an introduction to the subjunctive tense Ninety-percent of this class will be conducted in Spanish. Students with two years or more of high school Spanish and native speakers should take the Spanish Placement Test to determine their level and the courses they may take for credit.

SPA 202: INTERMEDIATE SPANISH II

This is the second intermediate-level Spanish course. It provides an overall grammar review that seeks to enhance students' active use of Spanish, especially in the area of conversation (listening and speaking) and writing. It will include further intermediate-level conversation, composition and reading in Spanish on numerous culturally-significant topics This class will be conducted entirely in Spanish. Successful completion implies a readiness to enter other language courses conducted entirely in Spanish. Native speakers should take the Spanish Placement Test to determine their level and the courses they may take for credit.

SPA 204: SPANISH CULTURE AND LANGUAGE I

An intensive course, three hours per day, five days per week, to be offered in Spain or a Spanish-speaking country. The duration of the course is approximately six weeks. It includes guided excursions to areas of cultural interest. Students are housed with local families whenever possible. Participation subject to approval by the department.

SPA 208: CLTRL APP-FOREIGN LANG SKILLS

A cultural project which offers students the opportunity to learn about language in a non-traditional set up, to be creative and innovative, to relate language to culture, and to test their skills in a communicative manner while rendering a service to the community. Since the course offering changes every year, students should inquire from the department as to what the focus is for that specific semester. Open to students of Spanish, Italian or French. Students select one language. Prerequisite: SPA 102 or 199 or permission of the department

SPA 271: SPECIAL STUDY PROJECT I

A special learning experience designed by one or more students with the cooperation and approval of a faculty member. Proposed study plans require departmental approval. Projects may be based on reading, research, work experience, or other activities that advance the student's knowledge and competence in the Spanish language. The student's time commitment to the project will be approximately 35-50 hours.

SPA 301: SPANISH COMPOSITN/CONVRSATN I

This course is for students who have attained an intermediate level of oral proficiency. This course improves the ability to speak, comprehend, read and write to an advanced level. It will be conducted entirely in Spanish and assumes an active command of the basic structures of Spanish and the ability to participate in Spanish conversation and composition. It emphasizes current events as well as other topics of culture through poetry, drama and literature of Spain and the Americas. Prerequisite: SPA 202. Native speakers should take the Spanish Placement Test to determine their level and the courses they may take for credit.

SPA 302: SPANISH COMPOSITN/CONVRSATN II

This course is a continuation of Spanish Composition/Conversation I. It further improves the ability to speak, comprehend, read and write Spanish at an advanced level of proficiency. This course assumes an active command of the basic structures of Spanish, the ability to participate in Spanish conversation and diverse forms of writing. It emphasizes current events in the news as well as other topics of cultural, historical, political, economic and educational interest, while preparing students for upper-level content courses. This course will be conducted entirely in Spanish. Prerequisite: SPA 301. Native speakers should take the Spanish Placement Test to determine their level and the courses they may take for credit.

SPA 320: COMMUNCATN & WRITNG IN SPANISH

A selection of literary, cultural and journalistic readings will serve as the basis for conversational practice and study of Spanish and Latin American civilization, as well as engaging students in creative self-expression. Students will be exposed to a variety of narrative styles, voices, registers and genres as well as the linguistic intricacies of foreign language study such as false cognates, Anglicisms, idiomatic expressions and other vocabulary topics. Prerequisite: Score of 600 or higher on Spanish Placement Test and permission of the department
